This comprehensive program combines the Security Guard Initial Training Program (SGITP)—required for all security guards in Maryland—with the Wear & Carry Permit (WCP) course, which legally authorizes officers to carry a firearm while on duty.

The Security Guard Armed Initial Training Program includes the following courses:

Course 1: Security Guard Initial Training Program (SGITP) (12 hours)

The SGITP is a foundational course required for all security guards—armed or unarmed. This program covers all 17 objectives required by Maryland law, including:

  • Professional conduct and ethics
  • Legal responsibilities and use-of-force considerations
  • Emergency response and incident management
  • De-escalation strategies and conflict resolution

Course 2: Maryland Wear & Carry Permit (WCP) Course (16 hours)

The WCP course builds upon the SGITP by meeting the additional legal requirements for armed officers. Key components include:

  • Firearm Safety & Handling: Comprehensive instruction on proper firearm use and maintenance.
  • Defensive Shooting Techniques: Hands-on training in grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control for real-world scenarios.
  • Maryland Firearm Laws: In-depth training on use-of-force regulations and firearms laws specific to armed security work.
  • Live Fire Qualification: A 1-hour supervised range session to meet Maryland’s standards for carrying a firearm while on duty.
